Let’s start with the, “where you’re from” part of this story. I’m from a working class section of Greenville, South Carolina. In this case, working class is a pleasant way of saying we were broke. Like many other Brothers, my road to Voorhees was unconventional. I was a decent high school student but I didn’t see college in my future. My Uncle, James Smith, was a Voorhees graduate. He spent two long years convincing me to go to college. I finally agreed to give this college thing a try. Unlike many Brothers, my first impression of Voorhees was, “Wow”. So, this is what college is like. Let me explain, I’ve never been outside of Greenville. For me, Voorhees was my first exposure to the outside world (that’s a scary thought). For the next two years I worked odd jobs (Post office, UPS, etc.) trying to find my way. But destiny and purpose has a way of making things happen even when we can't see it coming.

Once upon a time, in the not so distant past (in the fall of 1971 to be exact), in a far away place (well, actually at Voorhees College in Denmark, SC), I pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. This truly was a life-changing experience for me. Gentlemen, let me tell you that this was no easy task in them there days (excuse the abuse of acceptable language, but I needed that to emphasize what it was like back then). I spent six weeks on line pledging Alpha. I pledged on what was the second line to be initiated into Eta Iota Chapter.
